Consultant Sleep Physician & Somnologist
John O’Reilly trained in General and Respiratory Medicine in Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and Bristol. He gained further education and training in Sleep Medicine and Polysomnography at Stanford University, USA. He is a certified European Expert Sleep Specialist (Somnologist) and has been an NHS Regional Lead Consultant in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine for more than 20 years.
He has a special interest in Sleep-Disordered Breathing (OSA, UARS, Snoring), Occupational Sleep Disorders, Restless Legs Syndrome, Parasomnias and Narcolepsy. He was Chair of the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Group on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), National Clinical Advisor to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).
He has contributed to a number of major published research studies in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and is author or co-author of more than 100 published peer reviewed research papers, abstracts, articles and evidence-based management guidelines. He has been an investigator and contributor to a number of major multi-centre clinical trials in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine.
John is an academic reviewer for The British Medical Journal, Thorax, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, Primary Care Respiratory Journal, Chronic Respiratory Disease Journal, British Thoracic Society and Journal Sleep (American Academy of Sleep Medicine).
He is currently active in promoting education in Sleep Medicine as a member of the British Sleep Society Education Committee , co-organiser of the International Sleep Medicine Course, speaker at National and International conferences and lecturer on undergraduate and post-graduate Sleep Medicine courses at Liverpool and Manchester Universities UK. He has developed a postgraduate study programme in Sleep Medicine and organised the International Sleep Medicine Courses in Cambridge UK.
He has consulted on Sleep Optimisation to National Amateur and Professional Sports teams and is presently working with Clinical Commissioning Groups and Industry to develop near-patient diagnostics and improve delivery of therapy in Sleep Disorders using tele-medicine technology.
He is an Expert Panel Member for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline update on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and was previously the National Chair of the Royal College of Physicians Map of Medicine project for COPD and the National Chair of the British Thoracic Society Specialty Advisory Group on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
He is a former co-chair of the North West UK Regional Strategic Health Authority Sleep Network, Executive Committee member of the British Sleep Society and member of Council for the British Thoracic Society. He is member of The European Respiratory Society, European Sleep Research Society, and American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
John is a currently a member of a UK acute medical team involved in the COVID-19 response.
